NE Senate Update: Kleeb & Johanns Square Off

Democratic Nebraska Senate hopeful Scott Kleeb faced off against former councilman/mayor/governor/Ag Secretary Mike Johanns today (Thursday) for the first time.  Both are vying for the Senate seat vacated by Republican Chuck Hagel.

By all accounts, this was a sedate affair with the candidates just sorta getting to know each other.  No sparks, no fur flew.  And since we’re in the midst of some stormy weather, I suspect it didn’t get much attention.  

The venue was Kimball Hall on the University of Nebraska—Lincoln campus.  It was sponsored by "Cornhuskers Boy State" and was closed to the general public.  Press was allowed, and there is a podcast available online, via the Lincoln Journal-Star.  Local TV station KOLN/KGIN also has some video on their site.

I had initially questioned the wisdom of having a closed debate, but I think it might have been a wise choice.  It was not without controversy though.  Nebraska Green Party candidate Steve Larrick and another candidate protested that they were excluded from the proceedings.

Funny how all these dusty ol' career Republicans are now running on an Obamian "Change" platform.  Johanns insists: " ... he can provide it and bring valuable experience to the job." (LJS).  Kleeb countered: "You can’t expect to send the same people (and) expect different results,"

I love this guy!

I won't rehash the articles I linked to.  You can check out the bullet points yourself.  Of particular interest is how Johanns squirms out of the accusations that he's a job-hopper and a resume-stuffer.  He's clearly had time to practice his delivery in front of the 6-foot free-standing mirror I hear he carries with him wherever he goes.

NOTE TO SCOTT:  Okay, I can understand that you're against marijuana legalization.  It's be suicidal to take a pro-pot stand n Nebraska.  But what about the Ag implications of industrial Hemp?
